Mock Exam- Hannah

The internet is one of the easiest ways to digitally distribute music world wide. Social networking has a huge impact on the music industry within the market research aspect as well as the PDE and the actual consumption of the music.

Beck is a DIY artist, which means that he creates his songs him self, although he never records them. Beck releases sheet music to his fans and in exchange for the song he receives many different versions of that same song as it is up to the audience how they interpret it. This is why Beck relies strongly on social networking to become known, his niche community of fans are all musically talented as they play his songs themselves and upload them to sites like YouTube and Twitter to try and gain interest from other fans or Beck himself as he has his own Songreader website where he picks the best interpretations of the songs and adds them to an online album for the world to see. This way of working has lead Beck to have a relationship with his audience and create a dedicated fanbase.
Although Beck writes his own music he doesn't ever make a visual for this piece leaving the music video side of things down to his fans, this means that Beck wouldn't be known without his fans creating videos to post on social networking sites. This shows that in order to consume Beck's music you wither have to play it yourself or listen to it through social networking sites such as YouTube, again showing that the internet has a huge impact on Beck's career more than anything else.

The way in which Beck works is completely different to any Major record label. For example Sony is a conglomerate company and owns multiple cross media institutions world wide. Syco is one of Sony's off spring of smaller record labels which is the label One Direction, the worlds biggest selling boy band, are signed to. One direction became famous through the xfactor and ended up with a Syco record deal. Unlike Beck, Xfactor focuses strongly on visualisation and every week will put on a different show to see whats popular, they use this as a marketing campaign as every week the artist will have a different look to see what image the audience like best, as every week people vote for their favourite act. Major labels have also taken advantage of the internet side of digital development as they use itunes to sell their music and make money from it, an example of this would again be Xfactor, the songs that the acts sing on the night are immediately released on itunes, so before that artist is even signed or become famous the audience is big enough that the Major label makes money through them from things like itunes and spotify. This shows that although Major labels dominate the music industry because of the amount of money that they make and the amount of business they own they still use the development of technology to spread their songs as the internet has become more popular and a part of every day life, this way although they already have a world wide audience spreading music across the internet and TV, this is an example of synergy and shows that they need this to reach other fans and create a wider community of people.

Similarly to Beck, prosumers are fans that create things like mashups and covers of songs by artists that they enjoy, they use apps and computer software to mashup songs to create a new song, sometimes the mashup will sound good as it uses old music in new ways, an example of translation; but can be considered bad as the music is usually illegally downloaded from sites such as YouTube converters and pirate sites, making it not pure. Prosumers would not be able to exist without the use of the internet, they rely on it to download their songs, create their sings and distribute it; similar to Beck. Prosumers are usually teenagers that enjoy music and therefore they believe that they have a right to get that music for free, this puts pressure on the music industry as a whole as people are no longer paying for songs so they are therefore loosing money, this could mean that the use of social networking sites to distribute music could be putting a strain on the industry as well as helping it.

So to conclude I think that digital distribution is a huge part of the consumption and marketing of the music industry and many people would be unknown without it.

Exam question sentence

Social networking has a huge impact on the niche audience of Beck, as he wouldn't be known without it, he also wouldnt be able to promote his music without the use of online sites, however in some cases such as prosumers, like madion, making mashups which devalues music as it proves anyone can make a song in their own home.

Exam question

Digital media technologies continue to develop. How is this significant to media institutions and audiences?

Digital media technology would include a range of different things such as websites, mostly social networking sites such as Facebook, YouTube and Twitter being the main three, as these sites continue to develop it allows anyone to be able to become 'famous'.

Many people are able to post videos of themselves singing to either a song they have written or a cover of someone else's, after posting this on a site like YouTube they can then promote it through other social networking sites which would allow people that they follow or are friends with to watch the video and gradually increase the views. As the views and hopefully likes on the video proceed to increase the video will become more popular and word will spread until people worldwide are viewing your video.

This is exactly what happened in our with our case study in our prosumer groups with dj claudio high as we have uploaded music and a music video for our artist and got views and comments on our video which has helped us for a small fan community.

The use of social networking sites throughout this generation is increasing and finding new artists this way has become a great way to find people with talent from across the world as because they are becoming more popular they would have started to build a community of fans and maybe prosumers that view the video would start to make things such as music videos or covers of their songs. This would have an effect on the media music industry as  people no longer need a record deal to get their music out their as long as they put a good video up on YouTube people will start to watch and enjoy what they can do. But this could also make it easier on record labels as they can find what's trending and therefore know what people like and are maybe able to contact and sign that artist.

Another way in which the media technologies developing effects the industry is the fact that free music is now so easy to eat hold of with sites that allow you to convert YouTube videos for free and sites where you can just download for free. This then means that people have stopped paying for songs on things such as iTunes or buying cd's this has stopped the income for them songs to the record label so they are loosing money meaning that ticket prices for that artist are on the rise as they need to make their money elsewhere.
Therefore there are advantages and disadvantages of media technologies developing.

Beck Score & Song Reader

Beck is a composer and song writer who has written an entire album "Song Reader" as sheet music so that you are only about to listen to his songs if you get involved and play them yourself. He provides the sheet music and lyrics and it is then up to the audience how they think that the song should sound, this is why there are so many versions of his different songs in many different styles and genres of music. If you YouTube a Beck songs such a variety of versions of that song will arise form fans of him, his album is available to buy on Amazon and on various different websites across the net dedicated to him.

4. Distribution and Marketing
The album is distributed through the fans and the sheet music, Beck distributes the songs and the fans then distribute their version of the song. It is also marketed to a certain audience, anyone who can play an instrument can learn Beck's song and can listen to it, this shows his target audience. The music has been distributed to companies such as amazon and different websites.

5. Exchange
The songs are exchanged between Beck's fans as they make videos of how they have interpreted the song. This creates a bond between the fans and the music as they can hear the song however they wish as they have to play it.

6. Visualisation
The album is only visual in sheet music, people around the world then make it visual on sites such as youtube in video format to show their interpretation of the song.

Different versions of Beck's song Don't act like your heart isn't hard.

Here are some different versions of the song don't act like your heart isn't hard, although they are pretty similar there all have their own style towards them.

These photos are from various social networking sites that becks fans are using to exchange their versions of the songs, from looking through his followers I have found that there is a mixed age and gender group of his audience they are mostly aged between 21-30 and have musical talent to actually be able to play the music.

Hannah-Socal Class

Upperclass

Above are 4 collages of the different social groups represented in the clips given, this is to evidence that I can divide people into different classes and show the mes en scene, camera and editing used for each class.

Whilst watching these videos I have noticed that upper class people are shown to have more of a powerful status and more dominance over the other classes, this is shown through their costume, location and camera angles used. The costumes that upperclass characters are wearing are very posh and look expensive. The women usually have long dresses on, mostly old fashioned or vintage looking whilst the men are seen in business wear, such as suits to show authority and to give an impression that they work in high class high paying jobs. The props used would also show this as the men would be carrying a briefcase or paperwork and the women a lace umbrella which to show delicacy. Stereotypically the upperclass would live in a big house in the country side portraying how much money they have. Another location they could be shown in is an office as this is associated with their work and the jobs that they do. Regarding appearance, every person within the upperclass society is seen to be very 'perfect' with not a hair out of place and groomed to perfection. The sounds used in scenes with these people would be soft and the soundtrack could be something like jazz, the voices would also play a big part in showing that they're upperclass as they would be posh and well spoken showing that they are well educated. The editing would be slow pace and the camera smooth rested on a tripod and always from to show their life and to almost make people envy them as they would have prominence on screen as they are the dominant stereotype.

The middle class is the stereotype between upper class and working class so they need to be shown this way, next to the upper class they would be looked down upon so high angles would be used but to the other two stereotypes low angles would be used as they are looking up to the middle class society. The costumes worn would vary, they would still look smart but have a cheaper look to the outfit as a whole, it could be made from a cheaper fabric and not be as furnished as the upperclass society but they would be dressed alot nicer than working class or underclass. The middle class would be seen in locations such as big houses but also seen working daily as they need to be shown as 'normal' or working class too. The editing for this stereotype would also be slow pace and there would be family shots where all of them have the same prominence but it would be edited with cuts to show the two sides of the family. As this is the inbetween stereotype it has been more difficult to define as whats going on in each scene determines how they are portrayed.

The working class stereotype that are low paid and hard working they are shown in a family unit, they are not educated as well and are often seen as incompetent and stupid. The camera angle used would be a high angle looking down on these people and the edit a fast pace to show everyday working life. The sounds used would be a common accent using limited vocabulary, there would also be Foley sounds such as hammers and saws, chains rattling and the noises of construction sites and hard labour working areas. The costume would be a work uniform usually a hard hat and hivis vest showing that they working for a living, Shots would be composed so that there are family shots in a small house where the parents would have more prominence and be dominant over the children as they are less educated than them.

Underclass are considered the scum or society and would have high angles used on them the whole time to show that everyone is looking down on them. They would be dressed in dirty old clothes usually tracksuits making them look 'chavy' and are usually seen claiming benefits as they do not bother working. They would be living in a small house or flat with quite a few children they also are poorly educated and speak alot of slang there could be soft gently music to make you feel sorry for these people but they are most likely seen as vulgar and the villain, this creates conflict which is key in TV drama. They would have the least prominence on screen with fast pace editing and quick uneasy camera pace to convey their daily lives.

This is my essay plan for my mock exam

Mock Exam

After watching the clip the first stereotype I identified is underclass. When Merlin comes into the shot he looks as though he is up to no good he is sneaking around a room that is clearly not his and places a bottle on the desk to which he then discovers objects such as a voodoo doll and a book of some sort which all looks very expensive. One of the first things that becomes clear that Merlin fits into this stereotype is the clothes that he is wearing; they are old, outdated and look almost like rags or old cloth, making him look rough and poor, fitting into the underclass stereotype. Whilst Merlin is snooping around the room he is shocked when a lady comes in, she is wearing a beautiful purple dress; the complete opposite of Merlin, this contrast of these two outfits really show how different and poor Merlin looks in comparison to this lady. As the lady is approaching the room there is eary music playing that seems to get more intense the closer she gets, which gives the impression that he is scared of her making her dominant the dominant one. Once in the room she asks Merlin what he is doing there to which he stammers and stutters a reply implying that he is nervous and vunerable, which is another quality of the underclass society. Once he leaves the room he goes out into the market where the pace picks up and an establishing shot is composed where Merlin walks through the market and Arthur is in the background, this give the audience the impression that something is goign to happen. Arthur then begins to shout things at Merlin leading the scene into shot reverse shot which is used to show conflict in the conversation. As the fight continues Merlin ends up in the dirt of a the market floor and low angles are used to again show that Merlin is submissive and looked down upon.

Another stereotype that is shown is upperclass, this is shown mostly in two characters within the clip. The first is the lady that catches Merlin in her room, although she is only in the clip for a short amount of time there was many aspects that made her seem as though she fit into this stereotype. Firstly I noticed her costume, she was well groomed and wore a purple dress that looks very expensive. Her accent is also very posh and well eductaed, she seems very forward and wasnt afraid to question Merlin about his where abouts even though she is a woman and so is supposed to be submissive and the one that is looked down upon yet in this case she is the dominant one. Also the eary music that is played in the background of this particular scene becomes more intense and gives the impression that she is to be feared and is dominant over Merlin. Whilst Merlin is in the room the scene cuts away from him to the lady and back again which makes the clip seem jumpy adding to the impression of dominance to the scene, whilst in the room the lady has prominace and is the one leading the shot.
Arthur is also upperclass. He has a well educated voice and talks down to Merlin, he is seen wearing body armour and looking royal, with people working for him, which shows expense that is considered a quality of upperclass society. He is also carrying weapeons which could be considered fallic objects, as Merlin isnt carrying anything Arthur throws him one of his weapeons which could imply that he is showing off. I noticed that shot reverse shot is used again here in conversation and then again in confict along with longshots to show the full body language and then close ups to show the expression on their faces. Another way in which Arthur is seen as superior to Merlin is the way that the camera is looking down on him in the dirt and cuts away to Arthur standing over him, he has more prominance and screen time to show this superiority. Lastly the soundtrack over this scene is fast pace and upbeat creating suspence and tention during the fight. As Arthur is shown as dominant and superior he fits into the upperclass stereotype.

Another stereotype that I identifed in this clip was working class. The working class are portrayed in the given clip as servants or market workers, they have the jobs that no one else wants. They are dressed poorly in old clothes and most are wearing headscarves, they don't seem to care about their appearance as although they look clean nothing really stands out to say they try with how they look. They are surrounded by market stools and things to sell, mostly every day essentials such as fruit veg and cleaning items. The floor around the market is dry and muddy, everything around them is surrounded by dirt and dust, so they do not have a good work environment. During this scene you hear people talking and the hustle of working life, these are all foley sounds add in afterwards, but as the confrontation happens between Arthur and Merlin happens the background sounds seem to stop showing that they are important and they should have everybody's attention. There is no real camera techniques focusing on the working class of people as they are not the main focus of the clip and are in the background, the camera pans across the market and shows them as a unit.

Overall I think after watching the Merlin clip it is clear that upper class have all the power, as although at one point Merlin was winning the fight Arthur still comes out on top as Merlin was easily distracted, the contrast of the costume between the classes also makes it clear that the upper class are the superior stereotype. I think that the stereotype of underclass is challenged throughout this although Merlin is submissive he gets very sarcastic and rude towards Arthur who is upper class and meant to be looked up to.

Sexual representation of Sherlock and Moriarty

The clips show Moriarty to have a camp almost gay behaviour. One way in which this stereotype is revealed is through his costume; his clothing is tight and fitted, stereotypically women have tight clothing so he maybe associated with camp gay men. Sherlock on the other hand plays the part of an alpha male, he takes charge and gives orders. His voice is "manly" deep and forceful, he is also wearing dark clothes giving him a mysterious look, also the dark colours could suggest that as he is the only one in darker colours that he has power. Sherlock's location is also predominately masculine, giving him the masculine trait of intelligence. The gun that Sherlock owns is a phallic object and represents his masculinity giving him alpha male status. Although we first saw Moriarty in light colours when he reappears and is dressed in darker colours his masculinity is restored and conflict begins as the fight for the alpha male status. Although I believe that their gender role stereotypes are a lot to do with how they are portrayed in sexuality I think the camp male is Moriarty but it is challenged as the conflict and confrontations happen.

Camera Shots - Feminine or Masculine?

This image is masculine. The composition in the photo, gives us the impression that the man has all the power, the man takes up most of the room in the camera, he is taller, bolder and has most of the focus. The women is shown as a much smaller person, she looks worried worried and venerable. The lighting in the background makes you look to the the men in the background, they are  holding guns and covered by masks, this gives off a very manly feel and makes the whole image feel violent.
Although this shot is of a women we felt that it was avery masculine shot. The focus is all on the women, she looks dominate and important, these are the characteristics of a very masculine male. As the women is in the foreground of the photo and the men are tucked away in the background staring at her it makes the audience look at the women in a more powerful way.
This is a very feminine shot, as it is an extreme close up you can see the emotion in the characters., as emotions is a very feminine thing the audience automatically look to the female. This photo also reveals that it is a love scene which also shows the feminine side however a the male is leaning over her, he would been scene as a dominate male which would make the shot more masculine.
This would be a masculine shot, it is a low angle which shows authority and power, the fact the girl is holding a gun would also portray the masculine side to her.
Although the man is holding a gun, the shot is making him look feminine. The high angle makes him look scared, vulnerable and weak, the emotion on his face also shows that this is a more feminine shot as he is showing that he is feeling scared, worried and frightened.
This shot would be a feminine shot as it is showing all of the different stereotypes of women, she is showing her self off and looking for attention. The idea that all women should be sex objets and look 'attrative' is what this particular shot shows.
This particular shot is masculine. All the people in the shot look very powerful, they all look like they are ready for battle, fighting and violence is a very masculine thing. The focus is all on the front male giving him a very powerful feel, making him the leader and Alfa male.
This shot is a feminine shot as the lighting is very soft, this make the background of the photo out of focus which makes the image look delicate and these make the photo have a feminine feel.
The lighting in the photo makes the photo seem very masculine, the harsh lighting draws your attention to his face which then shows you that he is thinking. The man look serious and like he is important which are all masculine traits.

Moving Camera Shots:

This video shows a very masculine shot as the movement is not smooth and clear it is shaky and in a way that looks like it is following the characters.

This video shows femininity this is because the man looks dominate over the women but it looks like  love scene.

Analysis Of Gender

Group Presentation - Analysis of Gender in TV Drama sequences
Collect stills (print screens) as evidence and examine how the sequence uses/builds Gender.
Import your stills into Garageband and record a video commentary answering the questions

What gendered stereotypes roles do the characters represent?
What stereotypical attitudes or behaviours do they re-enforce/challenge?
Who has the power/status - who is dominant (why)?
How is gender constructed through CAM?
How is gender constructed through MES?
How is gender constructed through SOUND?

Men are portrayed as very relaxed characters, that don't care about what people think, they are shown drinking at work and having a laugh. They are shown in an office a place of work and are all wearing smart suits, meaning that they have high class jobs and therefore higher authority, yet neither have more authority than the other as all three are in shot and the at a medium long shot. In this shot the mean are laughing and joking around about women and the amount of lipstick there is.

Here we can see the men looking through a one way glass panel they are pouring drinks and spying on the women. This shows that women are only there to be looked at. The women are in the room testing out lipstick, stereotyping women here that they are obsessed with the way they look. As the men are overlooking the women and are the ones in darkness adding mystery and they are looking over the women adding a sense of power.

The women have been told to test out the lipstick and as it is a one way window the girls can see themselves in it, the men are then judging the women on how they look. This reinforces the point that women are judged on how they look and that they have to look good to please men.

What is gender?

There are different associations with what masculinity and Femininity are 'meant' to be like, we watched a variety of different videos and came up with a few different ones:

Masculinity:
- Strong, Tough
- Macho
- If a man is not strong, tough or macho then there are not a true man and will be mocked by females.
- Men should all be into the same things to be seen as a man
- Men cant be soppy, cute or sweet or they are seen as less of a man
- Men should be interested in girls
- Men should look a certain way, drink certain beer and even smell a certain way
- Men should get women or they are not a real man
- Sex is important they are less of a man if they don't get it

Femininity:
- Men are in control of the women
- Women do as they are told
- Women are seen as the ones who cook and clean
- Beauty or brain, women don't have both.
- Women can not be educated and be good looking
- Women should be slim, tall, pretty.
- Women believe they are only pretty if they are a certain way (ideal way for men)
- Women shouldn't get involved with the men's conversations - embarrassment
- Women don't have their own opinion
- Women should be plain and simple and try to out smart the men

Camera shots:
Different camera shots can portray men or women in different ways:
- High angles to make women look weak
- Low angles to make men look powerful and superior to women
- Different angles focusing on the women's features (bum and breasts) to imply that is all they are good for.

High angle - Women
Low angle - Men
Long shot - Women
Medium close up - Men
Extreme close up - Both
Extreme long shot - Both
